I did the amber tests online, using a hot needle to poke several beads on the necklace. amber should smell like pine, and plastic of course smells like plastic. After using the hot needle test, i decided to see if the beads would melt since real amber does not melt, but instead burns away and has been used as incense for thousands of years. My necklace melted and smelled HORRIBLY of plastic. Other moms in my local mom group also tested their IBF necklaces with mixed results. some had real amber, and some had plastic. A mom in my group messaged the owner of IBF about this issue and received this dismissive response

Thanks for the heads up. This is a nasty rumor that was started ages ago (by a competitor) and from time to time resurfaces. We used to try to address it when it would come up but found that ignoring it is truly the best tactic. The tests are bogus. Yes there is fake amber swirling around the marketplace - no doubt about it. That's why consumers should be careful. The best method for determining whether Baltic amber is authentic or not is in the results. The vendors who ARE selling fake amber probably don't even realize it. The smaller companies who have to buy from middlemen are the ones most at risk of getting fake amber. We buy in such large quantities that we can buy directly from the mine in Lithuania - where the best Baltic amber is sourced. We let the results of our product speak for itself and let rumors be just what they are - rumors.

Since she had already addressed this issue with a dismissive, scientifically inaccurate response, I chose to post a photo of my melted beads with an explanation of what occurred on the IBF Facebook wall. I received a very similar response as the one posted above with no attempt to correct the issue or issue a refund for the plastic necklace I received and that my son wore for the first year of his life!
