Let Your Geek Flag Fly! (A Glimpse at the Madness.)
I might be able to design fancy graphics with my degree from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, but I'm far from an eloquent writer. So please bear with me as I fumble through this.
I've been crafting since I was a little girl, but I truly didn't get into sewing until I was about 20 and entered the cosplay scene. I had watched my mother and older sister whip up Halloween costumes for me while I was growing up, but I never fully learned how to use a machine until I sat down and forced myself to learn. As you might imagine, I also never learned how to use a pattern. So I crafted them myself. After that, I was hooked.
A few years later, I hung up my cosplay crown and focused on my education. In 2010, I graduated from AAU with a BFA in Graphic Design and was delighted to find myself pregnant with our first child. After much research, I decided that cloth diapering was the right choice for our family, but I wanted to make them myself. Of course, in true Geek fashion, I decided to create my own pattern. That's how the "Pocket Protector" diaper line got it's start.
In December 2011, I was gifted the most wonderful embroidery machine. I couldn't possibly be happy with just plainly designed diapers, right? That's when madness it. My husband quickly taught himself the ins and outs of digitizing and we began to build a stash of the geekiest diapers anyone has ever seen.
I would get the normal ooo's and ah's and the usual "you should sell those" from people that we showed, but never really took it seriously. Then I found myself without a job and needed to make some money to help support our family. It was time to take this silly idea and move forward with it. A few months later, Seams Geeky was born.
